ECSONG Spring Field Days 2010All SONG/ECSONG members and their friends are invited to these free events. Bring your own lunch or snacks to last the day. See the links below for directions on how to find the sites. Wear good walking shoes - the site is hilly and rocky. You will see a thousand of the northern-most shagbark hickory in the world in a natural setting. Saturday 1 MaySawmill Creek ShagbarksJohn Sankey, johnsankey(-at-)ncf.ca with ECSONG in the subject linehttp://www.johnsankey.ca/crf/lavant2.html#sc We meet on the shoulder of the Airport Parkway. Starting at 10 am, we will be planting 25 Lavant shagbarks on a site provided by the City of Ottawa. Bring a shovel to dig out sod, and any 1-2 liter juice bottles (clear plastic) you have to protect the trees from squirrels. Saturday 8 MayThe Hardy Heartnut ProjectGordon Wilkinson, greenthumbgord(-at-)shaw.cahttp://web.ncf.ca/bf250/crf/heartnut.html Starting at 10 am, we will be breaking ground for a major ECSONG project, the selection of heartnuts hardy in Eastern Ontario. Tasks this spring include the moving of existing trees, tilling, then planting buckwheat to prepare an acre for fall seed planting. Shovels are useful. Saturday 15 MayOak ValleyMurray Inch, minch(-at-)storm.cahttp://www.songonline.ca/ecsong/oakvalleymap.gif Oak Valley is now run by a sister group, the Oak Valley Pioneer Park Volunteers, but SONG members are welcome to join in a general spring cleanup and maintenance day at this park-like site from 10 am on. Bring loppers and pruning saws if you have them. Saturday 29 MayCentral Research Forest PlantationsJohn Sankey, johnsankey(-at-)ncf.ca with ECSONG in the subject linehttp://www.songonline.ca/ecsong/dolman.html We meet on the Dolman Ridge Road at its intersection with Anderson Road at 10 am. Enjoy a day surrounded by warblers, ferns, and oak trees. Clippers and loppers will be useful to clear the ECSONG trail. Wear shoes that don't mind getting wet, or boots - there will be some wet patches.
