Heartnut Planting Plan

Tree spacing is 28 x 28 x 40 (8.6m x 8.6m x 12.2m) on a triangular pattern. Area = 1 acre or 0.4 ha.

G1, G2, and G3 = 3 different grafted cultivars.... 54 trees.

FUTURE FOLLOW UP
When even numbered tree rows begin crowding odd numbered rows, prune back or shear even row trees. Eventually, the even row trees may be removed or tree spaded into new orchard areas where they will be in full production in a few years.

We do not recommend heartnut seedlings as interplant trees, since cracking quality is too variable from tree to tree. If the nut from a tree is not easy cracking, it is not a commercially viable tree. Only grafted trees can provide the quality control necessary for commercial production.

Tree shelters make nursery heartnut grafts grow upright.
