To get there, come from Arnprior to White Lake Village, and turn left at Marshall's store.¼ mile farther on watch for the SONG sign on the left by thehay field. If you pass barns on the left, turn back.

Swimming Nearby! This is the annual Chapter Picnic - a social event. Bring a picnic lunch,refreshments, chairs and a friend.

Bring your own seed and seedlings for the Exchange. Report on the Spring Seed Exchange

The 1986 Spring Seed Exchange was held Saturday May 3, 1986 at the Baxter ConservationArea's Nut Grove, thanks to our host, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority. The seed andstock exchange was organized by the Horticulture SIG. The stratification pit was dug up in themorning, which was rather cold, so few folks turned up. Much of the seed was unclaimed, and sohas gone into understory plantings in a Jack Pine plantation near Merrickville.

The first Baxter Field Day was held concurrently and considerable work on the trees in the grovewas done. The trees came through the winter in good shape. The method of applying herbicidearound the base of each tree, then fertilizing and mulching with wood chips has yieldedspectacular results in both growth and appearance. It is certainly recommended!

This summer, be sure you visit the Nut Grove at least once. There are lessons to be learned!

Black Walnut Ice Cream

This recipe comes from Don Stalker's encyclopaedic library of nut recipes. Don says it is adaptedfrom a recipe he found in "Bon Apetit" of July 1985.

2 cup milk1 cup honey (preferably Australian leatherwood, orange or clove)6 egg yolks at room temperature1-1/3 cup whipping cream, beaten to soft peaks2 medium size ripe bananas, mashed1 cup coarsely chopped black walnuts

Bring the milk and honey almost to simmer in heavy medium saucepan. Beat yolks to paleyellow and gradually beat in the hot milk. Float bowl in a larger one filled with ice water andwhisk the custard until it cools to room temperature. Fold in the whipped cream and bananas.Process in an ice cream maker until about half set, the add the black walnuts and complete theprocess. Freeze the ice cream in a covered container for several hours to mellow it. Makes about1½ quarts.
