The highlight of the next issue will be an update on the bibliography and more excerpts from theWinter Meeting's technical discussion.

Report of the Winter Meeting

In this year's winter meeting, Polly Forrestall, Convenor of the Nut Use SIG which organised themeeting, tried an experiment. The meeting was an open seminar on any topic in nut bearing trees. The audience both asked and answered its own questions. The entire proceedings were taped andtranscribed. The Nuttery Editor, Agnes MacIntosh, reviewed and highlighted the tape. Severalpeople turned in their hand-written notes. The evening attempted to capture much of the wisdomof individual members. This knowledge will be examined and clarified, then publishedappropriately in the Nuttery and possibly also in booklet form in the future if there is interest andpeople to do the job.

A Proposal for Our Decennial

At the last executive meeting our Sec/Treas Paul Bender reminded the executive that thedecennial of our chapter will arrive in two short years, namely 1988. It does not seem that tenyears have passed since our inception but our records say it is so! Paul pointed out that such anoccasion demands an exemplary event! He suggested that we sponsor a scientific and technicalconference on nut bearing trees, with speakers and papers invited internationally. We would co-sponsor the conference with an academic institution such as Carleton University. The ideacaptured the imagination of the executive, and two years is a reasonable time for planning suchan event. The next executive, to be elected shortly at the forthcoming AGM, should appoint anArrangements Committee as soon as possible! Now we need a name for the conference.

The Potter Walnut Cracker Company

Finally! A nutcracker that easily cracks black walnuts - and butternuts as well! We recentlyacquired a nut cracker from a company called The Potter Walnut Cracker Company. Thisingenious device will be demonstrated at our forthcoming AGM. Don't miss trying it foryourself! We will have order forms available at the meeting. The company address is c/o DonBateman, P.O.Box 930, Sapulpa OK 74067 (918)224-0567.
(There is now a better method ofopening black walnuts.)

SONG on the Radio

The other day the chair Hank Jones, and Polly Forrestall, visited Paul Meldrome who does theCBC noon Farm Show on the radio. Polly had arranged an interview for us to talk about nutbearing trees in this area. Amongst other topics, Paul asked us about prospects for marketingthese products re farming. He expects the interview to be aired about the last week in March. Thanks for this opportunity to address the larger Ottawa Valley audience goes to Polly, and herwell-known media advisor Rick Jones of Skit Row fame, whose idea it was! Keep the ideascoming!
